Brown …the new pink
Brown is a boring colour right?
I’ve said that brown is the new pink, but I’m not sure if that is the right analogy …perhaps it’s more that Brown is pinks grown up cousin?
Brown is taking the design world (and fashion world…not surprisingly the two are strongly linked) by storm over the last year. I personally have had numerous requests by clients to use this colour and I’ve enjoyed using it.
Brown is most commonly combined with turquise, blue, green or pink to create striking modern colour schemes that are very frequently used by fashion retailers, boutiques, and more. Which is why I wonder if it’s become the new pink. A cooler more modern pink.
For some reason brown loves these colours and one of my favourite websites even declares that ‘Pink Loves Brown’- www.pinklovesbrown.com. I completely agree.
Only this morning I was sitting in bed enjoying a Saturday lie-in and reading this weeks Heat (3-9th March) magazine…the only magazine I ever read apart from ‘OK’ occasionally and I saw on page 110 this book cover;
I love the style of the cover (the swirls and plants remind me of what one might see on a Hansel & Gretal book cover) and the way in which beautiful chocolaty brown has been combined with several of the colours that it loves, and a new one I hadn’t quite realised looks so wonderful with brown before: Yellow. Specifically I think pale yellow is working well with the brown.
Another example of Brown Mania overtaking me as well as everyone else, is that this morning whilst chatting with my brother in law and his fiance (who have asked me to design their wedding invitations) about colour schemes from their wedding I couldn’t contain myself from suggesting brown and turquoise, or brown and green when they expressed and interest in green.
They seemed dubious but they are looking for a modern theme, and I told them that it’s very ‘modern at the moment’.Is there any colour that Brown does not love?

In this particular more corporate/business design it is teamed with orange, which I’ve done myself a few times, as the two colours work wonderfully together. See below;
